Lights Out

Revenge is an act of passion; Vengeance of justice. Injuries are revenged; crimes are avenged.

—Samuel Johnson

Jesse pulled the little white SUV up the steep driveway of the little house on Piedmont Avenue.

Jesse sat in the white Ford Escape and thought about the events of the previous night—of what happened within the last few hours.

The silence of the morning was broken by Katia’s puppy Loki barking from the backyard, where he had spent the long night all alone.

“Oh, buddy, you must be starving!” Jesse said to the husky puppy that was bounding and doing cartwheels in the backyard behind the iron gate.

“I’ll be right there, my sweet boy!” Jesse walked up to the front door, slipped the key into the deadbolt lock, walked inside, and closed and bolted the door behind him. He dropped the black duffle bag on the floor next to the door.

“Loki? Where’s Daddy’s big boy?” Jesse called out again, and the wailing song-like howl of the husky pup could be heard clear as day in the living room from the backyard.

Jesse reached the back door, unlocked the deadbolt, and turned the handle.

A streak of white and gray flew in from the backyard and rushed through the house at a breakneck speed. After a couple laps around the house, he finally returned to Jesse in the kitchen, where the husky-wolf hybrid jumped up and was nearly face to face with Jesse.

“Who’s my big boy?’”

The puppy groaned and moaned his happiness as he showered Jesse with kisses.

“Okay, let’s get you fed, buddy!”

Jesse walked over to the freezer, took out a pack of instant brown rice, and popped it into the microwave. The microwave came to life, heating and steaming the brown rice. Jesse then reached above the refrigerator and pulled down a large bag of high-quality dog food.

Jesse then grabbed Loki’s stainless-steel bowl from the floor and gave it a quick rinse and wipe dry before adding some meal-prepped meat and chicken.

The monster pup sat patiently and watched Jesse preparing his breakfast.

“Is Daddy’s boy hungry?”

Loki let out a mighty WOOF! followed by the typical husky groan.

“Okay, my sweet boy, here it comes.”

Jesse put the food on the ground, and Loki remained still.

“Go get it!”

Loki pounced on the waiting bowl of food.

“Okay, Loki, Daddy needs to take a shower. You be a good boy.”

The white wolfdog followed Jesse to the little pink tiled bathroom where Jesse turned the old backward knobs and started the water flowing for the shower.

Loki watched as Jesse got undressed, pulled the Doctor Who shower curtain to the side, and stepped into the cascading warm water.

Jesse stood there as he let the warm water hit the top of his head. The water flowed down his chest and over his shoulders to the small of his back.

While the water washed away the film of the events of that early morning, Jesse replayed the scene with Izzy over and over in his mind.

The look in Izzy’s eyes . . . the muffled screams . . . the sweat dripping from his body.
